New to Android - OTA Update Yesterday - Root?

    Greetings all -

Long time iOS user, now on a Razr HD Maxx. Figured I'd give something else a try when I switched from AT&T to Verizon. So far, I like the phone, but I have a few annoyances. I can live with all of them except one - the constant barrage of ads that Verizon shoves down our throats everytime the phone is unlocked.

So, I looked into rooting the phone, and I'm running into some difficulties. I've rooted iPhones and my iPad successfully in the past, so I'm not a n00b at it. But the process for this phone is kicking my butt.

I'm on Android 4.1.2 and I just received an update yesterday to go to System version 9.18.79.XT926.Verizon.en.US.

None of the rooting packages I've tried work. OneTouchRoot, motofail, RazrBlade... all of them fail.

I do not have an A/V package installed. I did have Lookout running, but I uninstalled that, in preparation for the rooting procedure, so that's gone.

Motofail and RazrBlade both complain about insufficient rights to carry out their exploits.

Soooo.... any assistance from those of you much more learned Android folks would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean

I'm not rooted and my phone works just fine by disabling bloatware apps.

Go to settings>apps then disable the ones you don't like.

    Tried that.

The culprit is, of all things, the Network app. Can't disable that one without killing my network connectivity! Sneaky of Verizon to do that.

If there's a way around that, though, I'm all ears.

To root you need to go back to and older system version I believe. The new update you took kills root. Its not as easy as it used to be but I believe its possible. Give me a little while and let me find some links.

I do have to ask first though, when trying to root do you have USB debugging and unknown sources checked?

Check and check. Yes, both of those are set correctly.

That did the trick. Had to downgrade to 9.16.6 first, which is part of the script that SamuriHL put together.

    Almost, anyway....

I have root, but the latest update kills the ability to unlock the bootloader. I cannot use motopocalypse to unlock the boot loader, and found this nugget in someone else's thread over on Droid Forums:

you must have taken the recent update which patched the exploit/hole it the trust zone.
this can not be undone, therefore you can no longer unlock.
    sorry

Sooo.... the reason for my wanting to root was to install Cyanogen. I had it on a Nook Color for a while and liked it, and thought I'd enjoy it on my Razr. Sadly, that won't be the case until another exploit/workaround can be found.
