\r\n Droid Razr has a known flaw with Mobile Hotspot\r\n

\r\n For those of you who do not already know, the Mobile Hotspot feature through Verizon - the paid service on a nonrooted Razr - does not function properly. It will not allow you to load certain websites on a device that is WiFi tethered to your Razr, while some sites work just fine. I decided to contact Motorola and after being very persistent I got an admission that it is a known problem.

\nHere\'s a quote from my email exchanges with customer support:

\nDear Deron,
\n
\nI truly apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing at this time. But our engineer is aware of the issue and they are working on it.The only option at this time is the usb tethering i am sorry. If you need further assistance please contact Android Support at the following number (800) 734-5870. Thank you for your continued patience.
\n
\nTap Settings
\nTap Wireless & networks
\nTap Tethering & Mobile Hotspot
\nCheck the box for USB Tethering (this option is not selectable unless connected to a USB cable)
\n
\n
\nSincerely,

\nRookmanee.*Auto-Response01/06/2012 01:58 PMDear Consumer ...
\n
\nJust wanted to warn anybody who is thinking about adding mobile hotspots to your Razr.
\n
\nBTW, USB tethering from a Razr to a PC works just fine ... USB tethering is included in the Mobile Hotspots feature if you activate.
\n
\nNote, you can use an app in the Android Market called EasyTether which costs $10 and does USB tethering to a PC. This option will allow you to use USB tethering without paying for additional Mobile Hotspots from Verizon. It\'ll just be part of your data package because your phone actually uses this app\'s server as the host. Anyway, it works just fine, albeit you cannot get real good data speeds like you can using Verizon\'s mobile hotspot and USB tethering\r\n

\r\n I\'ve used both USB and bt tethering with no issues on a Non-rooted RAZR. As far as I know there are no additional charges. Other forums have cited the TOS and this is a violation but there were no vzw signups when tethered

\nI definitely paid for wireless tethering, finally got sick of it (and dropping data) and bought a MiFi.
    \n
\nDo you have links for the TOS violation? I\'m absolutely disgusted with these issues and want to do whatever I can to get away from it.\r\n

No, but it should be somewhere in your myVerizon account. There is also a thread on the Motorola Forums about this.
    \n
\nUSB tethering should give you full speeds of 4G but BT tethering is only limited to 2.1 Mbps because most devices only support Bluetooth 2.1. Some newer tablets are beginning to support Bluetooth 3.0 HS and Bluetooth 4.0 which has an upward speed ~25Mbps like the Macbooks and our beloved RAZR.\r\n

\r\n My experience with the mobile hotspot is that its both random and inconsistent. Tried multiple times on the weekend to access my version account via hotspot, only to have it work just fine Monday. Have not spend any time tethered or for that matter enough time on https to determine if there is a pattern or if my system had enough cached information that it was able to allow me to login.\r\n

\r\n I know that Yahoo! doesn\'t work. Also, All Topics - The Latest News Headlines, Videos and Images - Digg does not work either. The Verizon techs, if you can get them to admit to it, have an entire list of websites that do not work. The websites that do not work, might go through once if you are persistent, but will not continue to work. I\'m still waiting for the fix paying my $30 per month.\r\n

\r\n So I went and checked out the Razr Maxx today just to see if it\'s got the same problem. It does. Then I went on the Verizonwireless Forum and vented after calling *611 and turning off my hotspot service. The Verizon Tech Support replied to the Hotspot issue on their site and said they where aware that it was an issue and work looking for a solution and that we needed to be patient. Patient? Really? At $30 per month, it\'s really hard to be patient for a service that doesn\'t work!
    \n
\nHere\'s the excerpt from my post at Verizon:
    \n
\nI have news for you. This is completely unacceptable. There is no reason for me to pay for something that I can\'t use! Verizon people don\'t even know about this issue, unless they are 2nd level tech. You\'re hiding the fact that Hotspot does not work on the Razr, AND your reps are STILL selling the phones to people that want to use it as a hotspot. I bought mine in October and my hotspot hasn\'t worked since switching from the worse phone ever, a Charge. At least the Charge\'s hotspot worked. The way I see it, you owe me back charges for the hotspot problem since I haven\'t been able to use my hotspot for 3 months now.
    \n
\nI called today and CANCELLED my hotspot. There goes $30 per month for your service. $30 that you were getting that wasn\'t costing you anything to provide. You should be provide it for free anyway. It doesn\'t cost Verizon extra for the providing a hotspot.\r\n

\nBut seriously, I agree with you. Why is Verizon acting oblivious to the Razr\'s hotspot issue, especially if this is supposed to be their flagship device?\r\n

\r\n WOW!!! This is amazing and why these forums are great! I just received my RMaxx 2 days ago and I as I was going through setting it all up to my likes, I tried the mobile hotspot. I upgraded from a DX to the Maxx. Overall, so far I have been happy except for the mobile hotspot. I too have noticed that it does not work as well as my DX (3G) and specifically YAHOO like mentioned above. I had 3 techs on the phone and they tried to blame it on my laptop. I am also not in a 4G area. I think I will cancel the service until I know this gets better by following the thread. I am not going to spend my $30/mo until it gets fixed which could take a year and would have blown away $360.\r\n

\r\n I had trouble with the mobile hotspot at first. I made 2-3 calls to Verizon and it is now worked out. I discovered my own answer as to why my Acer Netbook wouldn\'t connect: you have to run an IPCONFIG file and then it\'s fine. Then it kept dropping off the mobile network. It turned out that my locality is being switched from 3G to 4G and the RAZR was jumping back and forth because the 4G wasn\'t strongly in place yet. They showed me how to set it for 3G only and I waited for 4G to get up and running. Now I get 5 bars in 4G and it seems to go pretty well as long as there\'s plenty of battery power. When it gets to 25%, it jumps off the mobile network. Battery capacity is a real problem with these babies. If I\'m using it during a business day I have to stop and charge it 2-3 times. I finally bought a Motorola auxiliary battery, but it\'s nasty to have this thing dangling on your phone. If I had to do it again I\'d get RAZR max.
    \r\n
\r\nAs for getting to websites, we have the RAZR acting as mobile hotspot for several computers. There is no problem getting to any website I want on the PC\'s. There is, however, a problem with many websites not working on the Barnes and Noble Tablet and sometimes on the RAZR itself. I now believe this is because the providers of the device have monkeyed with it to keep you away from competitors. For instance, I cannot go to Words with Friends on Facebook with the browser because both Barnes and Noble and Google have a WWF app. When I click the link if Facebook I get sent to a Google Play sales page on the RAZR and the Tablet simply goes into a hiccup session. Both want to sell you an app, although the one on Google play is free. There are other instances where a web page won\'t work on an android device because they messed with it. For instance, you can\'t go to speedtest.com on the RAZR because Google has an app for that. Though B&N doesn\'t have a speedtest app, it appears to me they don\'t want you to test speeds because not only can you not go to speedtest.com but they have no speed test app at (there are other speed test websites that got around them though) and you can\'t install any android apps except the ones B&N sells (don\'t know why -' + '- it seems that the Tablet is highly oriented to childrens games and books). What I\'m saying is if you can\'t go to certain websites it may not be the fault of Verizon, but of the manufacturer of the device.\r\n

\r\n Well as a quick follow up, I turned mobile hotspot back on and some sites work like this forum (which I am using to post this message) and some sites do not like Yahoo. This is very perplexing but not worth the $30/month. Curious to know why this is the case. I can recall only using it like 5 or 6 times overall since I had my droid x over 2 years and that cost me $20/month. So I am going to cancel the subsciption. I have an aircard anyway for my laptop. I was going to use the hotspot as a back up or to network my kids IPOD touches. However, now they both have Iphone 4S so not much need to spend the money for hotspot. I will be interested to see if they get it fixed on the verizon end. Ciau for now\r\n

\r\nBTW, USB tethering from a Razr to a PC works just fine ... USB tethering is included in the Mobile Hotspots feature if you activate.
    \r\n
\r\nNote, you can use an app in the Android Market called EasyTether which costs $10 and does USB tethering to a PC. This option will allow you to use USB tethering without paying for additional Mobile Hotspots from Verizon. It\'ll just be part of your data package because your phone actually uses this app\'s server as the host. Anyway, it works just fine, albeit you cannot get real good data speeds like you can using Verizon\'s mobile hotspot and USB tethering

I was able to use USB tethering for a netbook and it worked once I figured out how to use it. Very fast too. I only have two complaints: 1) I can\'t have both wireless and tethering active at the same time. I am only tethering the netbook because I can only get limited connectivity with the hotspot. I don\'t mind tethering it, but we need to use other computers at the same time. 2) They have NO information on USB tethering. A search in the User Manual gleans nothing. The trick is to install the moto software that they offer you as soon as you plug in the USB cable. Nothing tells you that this software handles the USB tethering (it ony talks about file transfer), but it does. Be sure to turn off wireless hot spot if you turn on USB tethering.\r\n

\r\n Does Verizon know about the problems? Well maybe somebody there does, but the techie I talked to was flying by the seat of the pants. He blamed the problem on my Acer netbook and said I should get them to tell me how to set it up to work with mobile hotspots. What cabbage truck did he ride in on? Acer doesn\'t talk to you about anything. They simply replace what is defective within the warranty period.
    \r\n
\r\nMy problem is a bit different from that experienced by others on this thread. I haven\'t noticed a problem accessing any particular sites (although I may find out about this later). What\'s happening is I can\'t get a working IP address from the system when using the Acer netbook that I travel with (this netbook connection must work -' + '- it\'s the only reason for paying the $30 per month). The problem is, all my home computers and a Nook Tablet are getting on okay. Because other computers are signing on the techie said there\'s something wrong with my netbook. I replied that I\'ve been using the netbook at numerous hotspots all over the country, including my own DSL wireless router, and have had no problems. Verizon would rather point and shoot rather than figure out what\'s happening. So I came to the forum. I\'m going to try the suggestion for changing mtu size and will let you know how it goes. Thanks!\r\n

I have trouble connecting at all. Sometimes the SSID is not broadcast. Using WiFi Analyzer on a second android shows the HotSpot turning on and off repeatedly, at times. Other times it works perfectly.

Yeah, that\'s pretty much the same problem I\'m having. This only seems to happen with only one computer, but then I haven\'t really tested the others extensively. When I\'m looking at the Windows screen for available wireless networks it will switch back and forth between "Connected" and "Limited or No Connectivity". The bottom line is that there is no internet even though it is connected with excellent strength. I am soon going to trouble shoot this one more time with Verizon and will let you guys know if I come up with any info.\r\n

I am soon going to trouble shoot this one more time with Verizon and will let you guys know if I come up with any info.

If you have a second android available, load the WiFi analyzer app from the market (free) and watch your hotspot. Mine keeps turning on and off.

Yes. The intermittent nature of the hotspot got worse with it. Of course, before the update the problems connecting to some sites made it useless, so I don\'t have a lot of experience with the older version.\r\n

Yes I downloaded the latest update a couple of days ago while on tech support line. I had a lot of other issues with poor connectivity and response of the touchscreen. Some of those got better with the upgrade, some did not, but the hot spot issue was not changed that I can see. I also have now discovered an issue with the RAZR running on WIFI, but I started another thread about that if anyone is interested.
    \r\n
\r\nI already logged another droid device onto the hotspot (Nook Tablet). It seemed to log on quite fast and loaded several websites. I believe the Nook works okay on the hotspot. Somehow I think the failure has to do with settings in an individual Windows computer. The one that doesn\'t work is Windows XP, but I do have two other computers with both XP and WIN7 and both work on the hotspot.
    \r\n
\r\nDoes anyone know if these hotspots have a static IP address? If so, one may have to manually set up a connection. However, I believe this might stop you from signing on automatically to other wifi systems. (Sorry, I\'m not much of a techie and I\'ve noodled around with these things just long enough to be dangerous.)\r\n

\r\n I had the issue prior to the update where I couldn\'t connect to certain secure sites...but after the update, those issues seemed resolved...luckily, I have not suffered from the intermittent connection stability...

I guess so...but calling and asking them would be the best bet...I found the info about the $500 fee somewhere on Verizons website while I was trying to figure out this WiFi issue...and why my phone sometimes did not recognize my computer.
    \n
\n After seeing the $500 thing...I gave up on the "allowed devices" feature...and came up with a 32 character password.\r\n

\r\n Here is what I sent to Verizon - as it seems I have joined your group with a non working hot spot.
    \n
    \nHello,
    \n
\nMy issues are not resolved - so let me explain them again - especially with new information.
\n1. Prior to upgrading to the smart phone I used the Jet pack MIFI device to connect to the Internet.
\n2. I am using the MIFI for my Windows 7 OS lap top and 2 Android 4.0 tablets. The MIFI works perfectly with all of these devices and each connected via WIFI on the first try.
\n3. After turning on my Droid RAZR M WIFI it connected to the Internet in my lap top - but only after the computer made some kind of adjustment to “fix a problem with the wireless adapter or access point” (the text in quote brackets is exactly what the message said). It connects to the lap top each and every time with a signal from as much as 150 feet from the lap top.
\n4. Not so with either of the tablets. After entering the same type of info the tablet seems to pick up a WIFI signal and the message says it is a strong to excellent signal. The icon on the tablet also show a full bar signal but does not actually connect to the Internet. As I have left it on as a test - occasionally the connection to the Internet does take place for a short period of time and drops off.
\n5. I have made two trips to the Verizon dealer. My sim card and cell phone has been replaced. The records should show several phone conversations with Verizon support. And nothing has changed. I can access the tablet through the Internet using my Jet pack but not with the mobile hot spot. I was told this is the same signal so it does not make any sense.
\n6. I installed a WIFI analyzer app on the cell phone. It shows a strong signal and suggests channels 6-8. I tried them all and am set on #7 right now. It still does not work. The app also shows both the MIFI and hotspot signal.
\n7. I found a RARZ forum on the internet. They have an entire page or blog on this subject with people like me not able to make the hot spot work. The link is as follows: Mobile hotspot not working?
\n8. None of this makes any sense - especially if the signal for the MIFI and the mobile hot spot are truly the same “type”.
    \n
\nWhat I am asking is that you elevate this issue to a higher technical level and see what other common hot spot issues have been found and the solutions. The reason I upgraded my old phone was to get a mobile hot spot and it is not working. After this is done please call or e-mail me and I can set up a time to call from another phone - as I do not have another phone.
    \n
    \nThanks…\r\n

\r\n I\'m on the 912 just upgraded to jellybean Maxx and was able to get the hotspot to work. I did have to troubleshoot the PC, let it reset the adapter and set up my hotspot as a private home network. I sent this from it just to confirm. Maybe the upgrade helps fix it.\r\n

\r\n FoxFi works fine on Jelly Bean 4.1.2. But the WiFi Hotspot is blocked by Verizon.... so to bypass it you just connect in PdaNet Bluetooth mode. On a tablet you will need the app "PdaNet Tablet" this will pair to FoxFi when Bluetooth is checked.
    \n
\nNow Verizon has a new project to figure out how to block Bluetooth hotspots. Because I just tested it out and it works great. My Razr Maxx HD is not rooted and neither is the Nexus 10.\r\n

Droid Razr has a known flaw with Mobile Hotspot

For those of you who do not already know, the Mobile Hotspot feature through Verizon - the paid service on a nonrooted Razr - does not function properly. It will not allow you to load certain websites on a device that is WiFi tethered to your Razr, while some sites work just fine. I decided to contact Motorola and after being very persistent I got an admission that it is a known problem.

Here's a quote from my email exchanges with customer support:

      Dear Deron,

I truly apologize for the inconvenience that you are experiencing at this time. But our engineer is aware of the issue and they are working on it.The only option at this time is the usb tethering i am sorry. If you need further assistance please contact Android Support at the following number (800) 734-5870. Thank you for your continued patience.

      Tap Settings
      Tap Wireless & networks
      Tap Tethering & Mobile Hotspot
Check the box for USB Tethering (this option is not selectable unless connected to a USB cable)

      Sincerely,

      Rookmanee.*Auto-Response01/06/2012 01:58 PMDear Consumer ...

Just wanted to warn anybody who is thinking about adding mobile hotspots to your Razr.

BTW, USB tethering from a Razr to a PC works just fine ... USB tethering is included in the Mobile Hotspots feature if you activate.

Note, you can use an app in the Android Market called EasyTether which costs $10 and does USB tethering to a PC. This option will allow you to use USB tethering without paying for additional Mobile Hotspots from Verizon. It'll just be part of your data package because your phone actually uses this app's server as the host. Anyway, it works just fine, albeit you cannot get real good data speeds like you can using Verizon's mobile hotspot and USB tethering
